Boys Varsity Soccer vs. Marquette Senior High School
Boys Varsity SoccerFruitport took a long trip north to take on thr Marquette Sentinels in a showdown in the regional semifinals. The Trojans came away with a hard fought 4-2 win. After a back and forth first 20 minutes, the Sentinels got on the board first as Kaleb Chiplelewski scored to take a 1-0 lead. The Trojans bounced back as Ryder Merkins found Isaac VanderMolen who hammered home a strike to tie the game at 1-1. The Trojans found the net five minutes later as Nathaniel Cribley Cotto scored off a Davis Johnson assist. Minutes before the end of the first half, Hudson Hazekamp placed a beautiful through ball to find a streaking Jyles Smith who buried the breakaway to extend the lead to 3-1 going into the half. in the second half, the Sentinels struck at the 29 minute mark as Chiplewski converted a header to cut the lead to 3-2. Boys Varsity SoccerFruitport defeated Reeths Puffer by a score of 4-1 to claim the district championship on Thursday night. Isaac VanderMolen started the scoring early as he converted a header off a Grade Anspach assist. Carter Gregor struck later in the half with a beautiful strike to extend the lead to 2-0. Fruitport extended the lead before the end of half as Hudson Hazekamp found Jorge Burgos Yack to push the lead to 3-0 heading into the half. In the second half, Burgos Yack found Gregor who scored his second goal of the game. Logan Werschem recorded the win in net and made 11 saves on the night. Fruitport improves to 19-0-1 on the season. Coach Hazekamp noted, "So proud of our boys. To be able to win on our home field and have the community support through the district has been amazing. I am so happy for our community and program. Boys Varsity SoccerFruitport defeated visiting Grandville Christian 2-0 in the OK Silver Conference Tournament Championship game on Monday night. The Trojans got on the board midway through the first half as Jorge Burgos Yack found Hudson Hazekamp to push the Trojans in front 1-0. The game remained 1-0 all the way until the end when Logan Werschem triggered a counterattack that Burgos Yack finished with 10 seconds left on the clock to seal the victory. Logan Werschem recorded three saves for the Trojans and earned his 12th shutout of the season. Fruitport finishes the regular season at 17-0-1. Coach Hazekamp highlighted the back line of Sam Krueger, Braxton Ward, Isaiah Packard, and Nathaniel Cribley for great efforts on the backline. Boys Varsity SoccerFruitport defeated visiting Godwin Heights 9-2 in the OK Silver Conference Conference Tournament semifinals on Thursday night. With the win the Trojans claim the outright OK Silver conference championship. The Trojans offensive explosion started early as Grade Anspach got the Trojans on the board off a Jorge Burgos Yack assist 5 minutes into the game. Carter Gregor had a highlight reel volley finish midway through the half to extend the lead to 2-0. The Panthers answered with 15 minutes left in the half but the Trojans responded 30 second later as Isaac Vandermolen found the back of the net. Nathaniel Cribley scored off a header off an Anspach assist to round out the half at 4-1. In the second half the Trojans continued to pour it on as Vandermolen scored twice as well as Ryder Merkins, Burgos Yack and Gregor to round out the scoring. Boys Varsity SoccerFruitport defeated visiting Hopkins by a score of 7-1 on Tuesday night in the opening round of OK Silver Tournament play. The Trojans started slow but picked up the pace as the game went. Jorge Burgos Yack and Carter Gregor paced the Trojans with two goals a piece while Sam Krueger, Davis Johnson, and Ryder Merkins added goals. Isaac Vandermolen chipped in three assists while Hudson Hazekamp and Burgos Yack also added assists on the night. The Trojans had other opportunities but could not convert throughout the game. The Lakers scored midway through the second half. The Trojans jumped out to a 4-0 first half lead behind two goals from Carter Gregor and goals from Isaac Vandermolen and Jorge Burgos Yack. Boys Varsity SoccerFruitport defeated visiting Northpointe Christian 4-0 in a battle of two of the top teams in the OK Silver on Wednesday night. The Trojans got on the board midway through the first half as Satchel Norwood gained the endline and crossed the ball into Isaac Vandermolen who found the back of the net to push the Trojans in front 1-0. The game remained 1-0 until midway through the second half when the Trojans exploded for three goals in an eight minute span. Grade Anspach crossed a ball that Ryder Merkins headed home to take a 2-0 lead. Two minutes later, Jyles Smith finished a breakaway off a Nathaniel Cribley Cotto pass. The Trojans rounded out the scoring as Hudson Hazekamp found Satchel Norwood who slotted the ball home to extend the lead to 4-0. Boys Varsity SoccerFruitport defeated visiting North Muskegon 1-0 in a non conference game on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans found the net in the first half as Grade Anspach connected with Ryder Merkins who headed it home to push the Trojans in front 1-0. The Trojans threatened but could not find the net the rest of the contest. The backline of Braxton Ward, Sam Krueger, Carlos Cruz and Isaiah Packard stood tall the rest of the way and played solid defensively. Logan Werschem was solid in net recording 5 saves and earning the shutout in net for the Trojans who improve to 12-0 on the season which includes seven consecutive shutouts. In a back and forth game, the Trojans scored late as Isaac Vandermolen found the net with just under 8 minutes left in the game. The Trojan defense made it stand the rest of the way. Logan Werschem recorded 8 saves in net for the shutout and recorded the shutout. Fruitport improves to 11-0 on the season and 6-0 in the OK Sliver. Coach Hazekamp was proud of his team for finding a way to win noting, "First off, a lot of credit to Calvin Christian. I thought they were organized and tough on the ball. We had some good chances early that we couldn't convert which allowed them to settle into the game. This was a game where the grittiness was important in finding a way to work through a game where we maybe weren't our best. The Trojans fell behind in the first half as Godwin Heights converted a rebound off a corner kick. The teams entered half with Godwin up 1-0. The Trojans came out strong in the second half and controlled play. Jorge Burgos Yack broke the ice with 14 minutes remaining and slotted home a beautiful shot off an Issac Vandermolen assist. Jorge Burgos Yack scored off a set piece to push the Trojans up 2-0 before the end of the first half. Haslett notched a penalty kick as time expired at the end of the game.
