Boys Varsity Basketball vs. Union HS School

Game Date
Feb 11, 2020
Score
TROJANS: 68
UNION HIGH SCHOOL: 56

The Trojans earned a huge victory Tuesday night at home vs. the Grand Rapids Union Red Hawks. Earlier in the season, Fruitport fell to Union by over 40 points. Tonight, it was the Trojans who jumped out to a 26-11 first quarter lead and never looked back. Fruitport shot very well from the field, hitting 11 3's on the night. Defensively the Trojans were able to keep Union in check most of night, forcing turnovers and missed shots.

Leading the charge offensively for Fruitport was Gavin Fisher with 19. Luke Mitchell added a season-high 17. Marcelo Conklin added 13. Other scorers were Ethan Flores with 7, Logan Manciu with 4, Rico Jones and Adam Eitniear each scored 3, and Ryan Wagner added 2.

Coach Erny said, "This was a monster win for our program. We have not been very close with Grand Rapids Union in the past, and even our first matchup with them this year extremely one-sided. We came out today with great energy and focus. We shot well today, but a lot of that was due to the fact that we shared the ball and made the extra passes to get great shots. We want to continue to play in this manner going forward."

"Gavin Fisher played a very balanced game tonight, not only scoring 19 pts but making great decisions with the basketball. Luke Mtichell probably played his best game of the year tonight, and Marcelo Conklin was as steady as ever as a floor general. When those three guys play well at the same time, we are a very tough team to beat. We had a bunch of other players tonight who contributed to the cause. Ethan Flores was a bulldog out top on defense along with Conklin and they really made it tough for the Union guards. Logan Manciu always provides a spark for us and did so tonight. Adam Eitniear played solid minutes and had a big bucket to start the 4th quarter that helped us maintain a lead. Finally, Rico Jones stepped up and once again anchored our defense by taking 3 charges, all in key moments of the game. He has been doing that all year for us and it really inspires our team."

Up next, the Trojans will host Fruitport Calvary Christian on Thursday, February 13th at 7PM This game was originally schedueld for Friday, February 14th but has been moved up one day. Fruitport will be hosting a "Pack the Barn" night, as the game will be held on the old gym adjacent to the main court. This will also be an alumni night as all former Trojan basketball players will get in for free and be recognized at the game.
