The Fruitport ladies tennis team qualified for the state finals for the fourth consecutive year. Six out of 8 flights made the finals including #1 singles Trinity Busscher, #2 singles Haleigh Winskas, #3 singles Olivia Parling, #4 singles Hannah Kelly, #1 doubles Emily Dirkse & Alison Blakeman and #2 doubles Hannah Labash and Hope Busscher. Also, playing close matches for Fruitport but coming up short Friday were #3 doubles Katie Dirkse and Rowan Baird and #4 doubles Jillian Hawley and Ella Kestner.
Of the flight finalist, regional champions were crowned at 1 singles and 4 singles with great play and strategy. Hannah Kelly continued her dominance at 4 singles with a straight sets win over Cadillac in the finals. Hannah heads into the state competition undefeated on the season.
Trinity Busscher continued complete, all-court play with a semi-finals victory over Ludington confusing her opponent with a variety of shots. In the finals she used dominant, power groundstrokes to overpower her opponent from Coopersville.
This was a satisfying day on a number of accounts for the Trojans. Four Fruitport girls have been to the state finals for four years straight. Those girls, Emily Dirkse, Olivia Parling, Haleigh Winskas and Trinity Busscher have contributed to team success through four different state finals teams, playing a variety of roles. Parling, Winskas and Busscher also have the special honor at Fruitport High in athletics of being the only athletes in school history to attend the state finals in two different sports. Also, placing 6 flights in the finals was instrumental in the success of a 2nd place finish and demonstrated our overall team strength. Finally, these girls have lived up to the lofty expectations of a successful season. Some teams cave under the pressure. However, your lady Trojans once again won the Conference title for the third year and backed that up with a fourth consecutive State Finals trip. Great job Fruitport Lady Trojans Tennis!
